Surgery . . .

Sorry - I didn't post sooner than now regarding Matthew's circumcision. We went in a week ago last Friday for what we were expecting to be a 3-4 hour stay and ended up being there for 12 hours. Matthew came through surgery with flying colors but recovery was a different story. He woke up from the anesthesia quicker than anticipated and Mommy hadn't been called yet. He was screaming hysterically when I arrived. He calmed down as soon as I grabbed him but anybody who knows Matthew knows he has a temper and can cry very loud. The screaming caused him to rupture a blood vessel where he just had surgery and he ended up with a hematoma the size of a golf ball. They decided to leave it alone and let him go on the Phase 2 Recovery.

He had something to eat and drink and seemed to be doing well considering everything when all of the sudden the bleeding became worse and they called the surgeon back. He took one look and said we are going to have to go in for an emergency surgery to stop the bleeding. He believed the bleeding issue was due to the baby aspirin he takes every day. We had stopped it on Sunday but they said it stays in his blood stream for longer than that.

I told them I needed to be there this time when he wakes up. The anesthesiologist was awesome and calmed my fears. I was one of those parents with a hundred questions. Since he had ate, they pumped his stomach out and intubated this time to reduce the risk of aspirating. They said they would call me as he was being wheeled from the operating room if I could handle the tube coming out of his mouth. I told them I've been there before and it won't bother me. They called me immediately but Matthew started to wake before I had arrived so the anesthesiologist pushed a little Fentanyl (one of Matthew's favorites in the PICU) and off to sleep he went. I was there when he woke up and wow what a difference that was. He never even cried. He was doing so much better but they kept him longer just to be extra cautious.

We came home and he has been a real trooper. Up and playing like nothing happened until you change his diaper but that has passed and we are back to normal Matthew. Thank God his heart held strong for 2 surgeries. Thank you for all of your prayers and we are back to full speed.
I hope you had a wonderful Easter. I have some great pictures and will post them soon.
