Stable...

Matthew is stable and resting comfortably this afternoon. It appears that Matthew had an overdose of Clonidine last night that left him so sedated he was only taking 5 to 10 breaths per minute every time he fell asleep and his heart rate was dropping into the 80's, way too low for a 1 month old. We were so scared. Thankfully the Clonidine is administered through a patch and not through his IV so they only needed to remove the patch and put him on 'high flow' oxygen to bring him back around. He's still on the oxygen.

He was given an Upper GI test yesterday that came back normal today. This is comforting since we were worried that the test would reveal other stomach or intestinal birth defects that were causing the blood in his stools. His Doctors seem to be settling into an agreement that Matthew did indeed have Necrotizing Enterocolitis or some other form of bacterial infection in his intestines causing the blood and pain in his belly. They are going to continue the antibiotics through this Friday and then they will hopefully let him eat. He's so hungry.

I don't remember if I wrote in here that the infection in his incision is a Staph infection. It is not the antibiotic resistant type so it should clear up by the end of the week.

Matthew had his Lovenox (blood thinner) medication increased a decent amount over the past week and there was some concern today that maybe he had some bleeding in his brain as a result. They performed an ultrasound on his head this afternoon that showed everything is fine.

We are breathing a huge sigh of relief tonight.
